The scale was huge and the pace frenetic. Instead of a single moment where Microsoft revealed something dramatic, it became clear that innovation now moves so fast that Ignite is more of a checkpoint than a product launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Andy heard most people talking about was the concept of the Frontier Firm. It\u2019s Microsoft&#8217;s attempt to describe the kind of organisation that thrives in an AI driven world. Whether people loved the term or not (which is the subject of some debate), it dominated the conversations across the conference. The idea is <em>not <\/em>that you become a futuristic organisation overnight. Instead, every organisation will move at its own pace, building its own version of what Microsoft describes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-understanding-the-frontier-firm\">Understanding the Frontier Firm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-what-microsoft-means\">What Microsoft Means<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s model proposes three stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Humans supported by AI and Copilots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humans and agents working together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humans overseeing many agents that run key operations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus is not on shiny robots or science fiction. It\u2019s on how work gets done and how AI can start taking on meaningful chunks of operational activity so people can focus on higher value work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-what-this-means-in-practice\">What this Means in Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-the-governance-challenge\">The Governance Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris highlighted that Microsoft is predicting more than one billion three hundred million agents by 2028. That scale raises the same problems we have always had in data. If you do not control access, permissions, and visibility, you quickly end up with an uncontrollable mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-the-everyday-work-challenge\">The Everyday Work Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rajan looked at the practical side. For him, the most important question is how AI reduces repetitive or low value tasks. The point is not to create agents for the sake of it. It is to support the real day to day work that teams do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-the-technical-reality\">The Technical Reality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MLG spoke from his experience building <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/what-is-agentic-ai\/\"><span>agentic<\/span><\/a> systems. Agents are powerful, but they can also be unpredictable. What stood out for him at Ignite was the improved tooling across Microsoft Foundry and the new Agent 365 ecosystem. These offer developers better ways to build, test and monitor agents so they can behave consistently inside real organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-the-cultural-reality\">The Cultural Reality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy added that organisations need confidence and clarity. Most people understand simple <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/advantages-custom-intelligent-agent-vs-microsoft-copilot-studio\/\"><span>Copilot<\/span><\/a> features. Most can imagine advanced automation. The challenge is everything in between. Organisations need a roadmap that is ambitious but also realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-adoption-barriers-and-opportunities\">Adoption Barriers and Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A question during the live event asked about the biggest challenges to adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group agreed that organisations need all three of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technical Readiness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You must have a clean, well governed and discoverable data estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cultural Readiness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>People must understand when and how to use agents and what good looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Governance Readiness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot deploy agents at scale without policies, controls and monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Andy said, you would not hire a thousand people without onboarding and training. The same applies to AI agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-ms-ignite-announcements-by-product\">MS Ignite Announcements by Product<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team reviewed the major changes across <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/microsoft-fabric-enterprise-data-platform\/\"><span>Fabric<\/span><\/a>, Foundry, <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/is-microsoft-purview-the-answer-to-modern-data-governance\/\"><span>Purview <\/span><\/a>and Microsoft AI services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-microsoft-fabric-the-intelligence-layer-takes-shape\">Microsoft Fabric: The Intelligence Layer Takes Shape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rajan took the audience through the biggest changes in Fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-fabric-iq\">Fabric IQ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fabric IQ introduces a new layer of intelligence across the platform. Ontology maps let you define the real business relationships behind your data. This makes insights richer and gives agents more meaningful context to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-operations-agents\">Operations Agents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For Rajan, Operations Agents are the standout feature. They allow organisations to close the loop between insight and action. Instead of dashboards hoping someone does something, Fabric can now monitor data, suggest actions, and trigger workflows. This is surfaced directly in tools like Teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-interoperability-with-databricks-and-others\">Interoperability with Databricks and Others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most encouraging themes was Microsoft&#8217;s shift toward open integration. Fabric will work more closely with <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/advanced-data-engineering-with-databricks\/\"><span>Databricks<\/span><\/a>, Snowflake, and SAP. OneLake-backed compute for Databricks is planned for future releases. Andy noticed how often interoperability came up at Ignite. Microsoft now accepts that real organisations run mixed estates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-purview-and-agent-365-governance-grows-up\">Purview and Agent 365: Governance Grows Up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris explained why Purview had a smaller public presence at Ignite. The reason is that governance is being repositioned within the new Agent 365 framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-agent-365-brings-five-key-capabilities\">Agent 365 Brings Five Key Capabilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. A registry of every agent in your organisation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Central access control using Entra ID<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Visibility into what agents do<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. An understanding of how agents interact across departments<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Security anchored in Purview<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This directly addresses the problem of agent sprawl. As Chris put it plainly, AI <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/role-of-data-governance-in-ai\/\"><span>governance<\/span><\/a> is not optional. It is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-microsoft-foundry-a-mature-space-for-ai-developers\">Microsoft Foundry: A Mature Space for AI Developers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MLG walked through how Foundry has evolved into a unified space for building, evaluating and managing agentic systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-foundry-iq\">Foundry IQ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives developers the ability to benchmark agents, measure accuracy and check factual grounding. Without testing, there is no trust. Foundry IQ is Microsoft&#8217;s answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-agent-lifecycle-management\">Agent Lifecycle Management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Foundry now supports versioning, AB testing and controlled retirement. If one agent outperforms another, you can replace it safely and consistently. This is vital if organisations want agents to work at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-what-does-all-this-mean-for-organisations\">What Does All this Mean for Organisations?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the discussion, four clear messages emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strategy First<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology should support your business strategy. Without clarity on what you are trying to achieve, AI becomes a distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Readiness Matters<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Adoption will not work if your data estate, <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/how-can-you-demonstrate-the-roi-of-data-governance\/\"><span>governance<\/span><\/a> or culture is not prepared. Just because the capabilities exist does not mean you are ready to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trust Must Be Earned<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>People will only trust agent driven actions if results are reliable, transparent and grounded in fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Governance will Decide Success<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Agent 365 and Purview will be central to safe adoption. Governance gives you the confidence to scale without losing control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-final-thoughts-from-the-oakland-team\">Final Thoughts from the Oakland Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ignite 2025 didn\u2019t feel like a tech expo where one big announcement stole the show. Instead, it marked a point where Microsoft began stitching together years of change into a more coherent story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The frontier firm is not a single destination. It is a direction of travel. Organisations will move at different speeds and in different ways. What matters is strong data foundations, clear governance and a realistic roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland&#8217;s focus remains the same.
