AI and business topics they dived into include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What it really means to \u201cliberate data\u201d in the age of AI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why hype-driven adoption can lead to more headaches than headlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How organisations can get back to basics to unlock genuine business value from AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>True to form, his trademark mix of practical insight, a dash of scepticism, and the occasional hammer analogy kept the discussion around AI for business grounded in real-world experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Let\u2019s stop looking for things to hit with the AI hammer &#8211; and start with what actually adds value.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Richard Corderoy, CEO of Oakland Everything Data<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-no-more-ai-fairytales\">No More AI Fairytales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been to any conference lately, you\u2019ve probably heard the AI hype machine in full swing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s the future!\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019ll change everything!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIf you\u2019re not doing it, you\u2019re already behind!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard says, &#8220;Honestly, I think we\u2019ve lost our heads a bit. Everyone started with, \u2018I have a hammer, what can I hit?\u2019 and, funnily enough, that causes a lot of mess and not much actual value.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Oakland Everything Data, we believe the question isn\u2019t \u201c<em>Should<\/em> we do AI?\u201d. It\u2019s \u201c<strong><em>Why<\/em><\/strong><strong> do we need it, and <\/strong><strong><em>what <\/em><\/strong><strong>are we trying to achieve?\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-value-first-start-at-the-end\">Value First &#8211; Start at the End<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland\u2019s mantra is simple: start with value. We\u2019re so passionate about value that it is one of our five principles for creating lasting <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/why-is-data-important-for-business\/\"><span>data<\/span><\/a> impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;None of this matters until someone makes a better decision, a customer gets a better service, or a process actually changes for the better,&#8221; Richard explains. &#8220;So let\u2019s start at the end &#8211;&nbsp; what do you want to achieve &#8211; and work backwards from there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means AI isn\u2019t the starting point. It\u2019s a tool, one of many, to help solve a business problem. And in Oakland\u2019s experience, most of the time the real blockers aren\u2019t technological at all. They\u2019re about messy processes, unclear ownership, or bad <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/services\/data-governance\/\"><span>governance<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-why-ai-projects-stumble\">Why AI Projects Stumble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what\u2019s holding big firms back, Richard doesn\u2019t hesitate: &#8220;Data complexity. Even mid-sized organisations are drowning in it. They\u2019ve tried a few tech fixes, maybe moved to the cloud, but haven\u2019t got the full value they expected. Then AI comes along with all this promise &#8211; and panic sets in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He sees it often: the fear of being left behind meets uncertainty about where to start. Add pressure to spend wisely, and you\u2019ve got a recipe for half-baked experiments that never make it to production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-agentic-ai-the-smart-intern-approach\">Agentic AI \u2013 The \u201cSmart Intern\u201d Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Richard\u2019s favourite concepts is <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/what-is-agentic-ai\/\"><span>Agentic AI<\/span><\/a> &#8211; not a giant all-knowing brain, but a network of small, specialised AI \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/the-future-of-ai-is-ai-agents\/\"><span>agents<\/span><\/a>\u201d that each do one job well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Think of them as smart interns. You wouldn\u2019t hire 50 people to read and categorise all your product descriptions, but you can get a couple of agents to do that. They\u2019re not free but they\u2019re a lot cheaper than a human team.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Richard Corderoy, CEO of Oakland Everything Data<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick? String these agents together so they can collaborate much like people in a process and let them handle repetitive, time-heavy work so humans can focus on higher-value thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/services\/ai-consulting\/\"><span>AI Strategy Consulting<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-a-real-world-example\">A Real-World Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard shares a client project he\u2019s particularly proud of. A large sales organisation needed to recategorise tens of thousands of products into new business-defined categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The old way? Interns Googling products, reading PDFs, updating records\u2026 and then doing it all again 50,000 times. <strong>Painful<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Oakland built a team of <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/blog\/why-we-recommend-the-intelligent-agent-approach-to-ai\/\"><span>AI agents<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One read and extracted existing product data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another searched supplier websites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/weareoakland.com\/services\/data-analytics-and-insights\/\"><span>analysed<\/span><\/a> documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A \u201ccoordinator\u201d agent pulled the inputs together and made the final categorisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? Set sensible tolerances and move on.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Richard Corderoy, CEO of Oakland Everything Data<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-governance-without-red-tape\">Governance Without Red Tape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard is clear: governance matters, but it can\u2019t become a three-year paperwork exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve all seen those rooms with shelves of process binders no one looks at. That\u2019s governance done wrong. The right level of governance depends on what you\u2019re governing and the risk involved. AI shouldn\u2019t get a free pass, but let\u2019s not pretend bias is new.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland\u2019s approach is to help clients define what \u201cethical\u201d means for them, pick use cases with manageable risk, and design governance around that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-richard-s-advice-for-businesses-feeling-overwhelmed\">Richard\u2019s Advice for Businesses Feeling Overwhelmed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-1-stop-talking-about-ai-as-if-it-s-one-thing\">1. Stop talking about AI as if it\u2019s one thing.\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decide what type of AI you\u2019re talking about and why it matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-2-list-your-biggest-problems-without-a-tech-person-in-the-room\">2. List your biggest problems without a tech person in the room.\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then figure out which ones could be solved with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-3-accept-good-enough-in-the-right-contexts\">3. Accept \u201cgood enough\u201d in the right contexts.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Perfection is a luxury, value comes from speed and integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-4-build-in-small-steps\">4.
